We can help you obtain Animal Export Health Certificates for Animals, Products and Germplasm

DEFRA Official Veterinarian Export Certificates
In order to export live animals, or products that are derived from animals, you will require an Animal Export Health Certificate (EHC) from DEFRA. This applies to exports to countries both inside and outside the EU and also for Northern Ireland. Animal export health certificates must be signed by an Official Veterinarian (OV) and you will need one if you wish to export live animals, animal products (including samples), and/or embryos.

Animal export
Overseas breeding or research collaborations?
We’re qualified and able to assist you with Animal Health Certification (EHC) for exporting animals to bone fide research institutes overseas or within the UK. We recommend that you use a dedicated professional courier for transport, to ensure a smooth and trouble-free journey for your animals.
We will visit you on, or shortly before, the day of export to check the animals’ good health and suitability to travel, and advise on safeguarding their welfare during the journey.
Product Export
Need to export blood samples, tissues, or other animal-derived products?
Export processes for animal-derived products have changed markedly since Brexit in January 2021. We are up-to-date with requirements and hold DEFRA / APHA Official Veterinarian (OV) Status for export of research products, such as tissues, serum and more. Export of animal products can be quite complicated: to complete the export health certificate, documentation and other declarations regarding the nature and origin of the product may also be required. Please check with the importer, or ask us for advice!
In readiness for the export, we will visit your premises to examine the items, appropriate sealed packaging and to check that the ‘paperwork’ is all in order.

Embryos & germplasm
Alternative to export of live animals
We recommend exporting embryos or sperm, instead of sending live animals, as this removes stress of transport for these precious animals. If you and the receiving institute have the capability, then sending frozen material presents an excellent welfare refinement.
We have many years of experience with export of germplasm (such as embryos & sperm), hold the correct APHA Official Veterinarian panels and would be pleased to assist you. Do be in contact to discuss your requirements, whether for regular or one-off consignments.
Further information on animal export is available on the UK Government’s APHA Export website.
